Facebook Launches Trending Section

A new section in your Facebook Home wall sidebar will now reveal a “Trending” section that shows a list of suggested stories and topics currently popular on Facebook. Interesting or not, this new feature will first launch in Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and India in the first two weeks starting Thursday. All other countries and Facebook’s mobile app version will follow suit later one.

Clicking on a topic on the Trending section reveals popular posts especially those shared and posted by friends. Rivaling Twitter’s famous trending keywords and hashtags, Facebook intends to compete with the microblogging frontrunner as the hub to which social media users will want to stay in. One of the managers in the Trending project, which began testing during the U.S. summer months, said “the new service was designed to be easier to understand and more customized than, say, Twitter’s list of trending topics, which is often just a list of cryptic keywords or hashtags,” reports the New York Times Bits Blog.

Though still in the raw or rough stages, according to beta users, Trending will eventually evolve through user feedback. However, Facebook’s Trending seems to be a more comprehensive version of Twitter’s, the latter sometimes creating more questions like what it means or why it is popular.
