Beware of Facebook Starbucks Scam

Tele-commuting in Starbucks

The scam sounds and looks like a promotional offer from Starbucks. You are offered a free coffee and when you click on the link contained in the mail or page, you are taken to a third-party site via a series of redirections in a new browser window. Then, you are asked to fill up a survey in order to claim your prize wherein you’re also asked to enter your mobile phone number. Afterwhich, you are subscribed to a number of services which make charges on your mobile account daily.

Though scams like this have been around, most offer expensive prizes like an iPad or other electronic gadgets. Offering you a cup of coffee becomes innocuous because the cost of the prize isn’t high and you think it’s credible because, well, it is Starbucks. TechWatch reports that the destination site has been in operation since 2008 and is registered under a company known to be used by cybercriminals.
